Garden Update 3

E-mail Print PDF

Well it has been almost 6 weeks since we started our project. The lettuce we had in a small pot before we started are all gone, but the seeds we planted are getting bigger by the day. Soon we will have lettuce back on the menu. The beetroots are growing really well so beetroot tops are part of our salad mix now. The radishes will be ready soon too.

To speed up our produce we purchased some chili and capsicum  plants. They are doing well and will be soon supplying fresh salsa ingredients.

We now have 4 beds plus the potatoes. To date we have planted, lettuce, tomatoes, potatoes, spring onions, Chinese greens, carrots, garlic, chillies, capsicums, beans, beetroot, celery and radishes. We will be creating one or two more beds shortly. These will have broccoli, leeks and cauliflower.

In our spare time we have started work on our clay oven. I will write more about this project in a separate update. It was to be a long term project, however with the bottom dam dry I had access to a good source of clay as well as using the silt and run off in the bottom of the dam for one of the new beds. It was excellent compost. It rained 2 days later filling all the dams to capacity so our timing was excellent.

Succession planing and planting will now become important. With lettuce soon to crop it is time to start planing the next round of seedlings.
