Garden Update

E-mail Print PDF

We've finally finished and filled the first of our new garden beds near the house. Filling them with soil was quite a job as we can't bring a vehicle close to this area. Barrow loads of soil were moved from the old garden to the new spot. The weather has been hot this week, limiting the time we could spend working on the garden.  Other interruptions (such as earning a living) also had to take priority, but the first new bed is finished and planted. We've transplanted a few small chilli plants that weren't doing well in the pots. Dwarf beans are small and productive and have a nice spot here too. Finally, we included some beetroot. These are very productive, the tops can be used in salads and the much maligned root can be roasted, preserved and even grated raw on a salad for a wonderful earthy flavour.

The last four sleepers were brought home yesterday and work on the second bed will begin today. Looks like being another hot and dry day.
While the farmer plays with his giant fiddle-sticks, the farmer's wife will be making home made lemon cordial, tucking a home made lasagne into the freezer and reading some more about bread making.
